Protraction and retraction
Protraction and retraction are anterior-posterior movements of the scapula.
Protraction of the scapula occurs when the shoulder is moved forward, as when pushing against something or throwing a ball. Retraction is the opposite motion, with the scapula being pulled posteriorly and medially, toward the vertebral column.
Scapular retraction refers to movement of the scapula towards the spine. The opposite is protraction, moving the scapula away from the spine.
Elevation and depression
Elevation and depression are upward-downward movements of the scapula.
Scapular elevation refers to movement of the scapula upwards the ears. The opposite is depression, which is bringing the scapular away from the ears.
Superior rotation and inferior rotation
Superior rotation refers to upward and outward movement of the inferior angle of the scapula away from the vertebral column. Superior rotation occursduring upper limb abduction.
Inferior rotation refers to downward and inward movement of the inferior angle of the scapula toward the vertebral column. Inferior rotation occurs during upper limb adduction.
